Final Project

Our Final project was a compilation of everything that we have learned all semester long. This project focuses on designing a multiple family dwelling that is a Transit Oriented Design. We used the same lot which we have researched on Conklin Road. Our lot is located on the right side and it connects with the design five students Bus Station. We had to keep into consideration the history of the site, surrounding  buildings and the airport.

My design take off for this project was based on a propeller. Because the site had previously been used for manufacturing airplane parts and because it is adjacent to the airport. I started by measuring the maximum square footage of each room, i my dimensions from the studio apartment until the three bedroom 2 bathroom escalate two feet at a time creating a rhythm to the size in a shape of a propeller. I made the exterior elevations look like they were hangers while the roofs elevate one foot at a time to represent a bird flying. In the main lobby, i placed a glass pyramid on the roof representing the nose of the propeller but not only is this part of the design but also brings light into the second floor lobby naturally.  The main lobby on both floors was designed to be similar in regular airport lobby's  with the glazed walls looking into the outside letting light in.

In order to fit the 84 apartments i had to make two propeller modules, the main one has two floors and the remaining rooms that couldn't fit into the main one i placed them into a smaller module with only one floor. I added fire escapes including refuge areas in the middle of each side of the wings of the propeller including stairs and elevators for fire evacuations. keeping into consideration on how vehicles, service vehicles and handicap accessibility vehicles enter and exit the lot. I created three different entrances where the main one could be entered from left and right side turns and the far end entrances are only right side turns.

Handicap accessibility was taken into consideration on the design. From the parking spaces, bathrooms to the width of the hallways.
