FORM AND FUNCTION

Form follows Function. This project focuses on designing a pedestrian bridge that has a open/ close mechanism to allow boats to go through with a span of 30'x40'. We begin by choosing three existing prototype bridges of our choice. Then we had to find 5 moving objects that have mechanism to act as the function.  Depending on the mechanism that we add into the bridge, the form of the bridge will slowly start to change. I used a mechanism of pulleys  pulling a piston.

PROTOTYPES

The three prototy[es i chose to modified were: The Samuel Becket bridge (straight cable), The Tokyo gate bridge(truss) and the Luisitania bridge (tied arch bridge).

The three moving mechanisms i incorporated were a multi tool knife with a folding/ opening mechanism, a caulk gun (with a lifting and lowering as you squeeze the handle mechanism). and an ice cream scoop ( As you press the button it moves the inner arm to let go of the scoop mechanism.)

PRELIMINARY DESIGNS

After practicing 28 different solutions of what mechanisms we can implement into the bridge i developed 2 preliminary designs.I chose the concept of lifting pistons with a pulley mechanism. The Bridge i modified was the Luisitania bridge.
